4/24/2015 KAIT News – A Region 8 city is hoping to pass an ordinance that would ban “tiny houses.”

Walnut Ridge has an ordinance before the city council requiring all residential homes to be at least 600 square feet.

The planning and zoning committee began looking at the city plans 2 years ago.

The idea stemmed from the desire to improve the quality of life along with resale value of homes.

Walnut Ridge Fire Chief Frank Owens said it’s also linked to growth coming to the area.

“With the addition with the new factory coming, the Peco plant coming to Randolph County, we are expecting several residential structures to be built in our city this year,” Owens said.

They believe banning tiny houses, homes smaller than 600 square feet, will also improve the landscape and beautify the residential area around Walnut Ridge.

The ordinance must go before the city council 2 more times before it can become law.
